Designing & consuming with responsibility

Friday, June 26th, 2009

We all know that buying less stuff makes good sense. But some of us think that it might cramp our style. We all have needs and most of us enjoy buying new things. So when we can’t buy less we can at least buy smart. Smart consumptions means figuring out who makes the best available products and where they can be found. We should look for products which are made with following:

- Organic & biodegradeble fibers ( Cotton, Hemp, Bamboo, Wool)

- Recycled Materials ( Recycled polyester)

- Sweat shop free labour

- Biodegadeble Print ink for Graphics such as soy ink, without PVC or glue.

- Regrind/ Recycled Trims

Designing a sustainable world

Friday, June 26th, 2009

For better or for worse, the material stuff that surrounds us shapes our life’s. Products have brought what’s arguably the zenith of human comfort, for those who can afford them. We’re knee-deep in useful things such as refrigerators and quality footwear yet we are also laden with the detritus of the last generations’ objects. The periphery of our comfort zone is lined with waste. The fact that all stuff, every t-shirt, every pair of flip-flops was made with intention is almost as astounding as the sheer number of things around the world. Some designer ensured that it would take scarcely any thought to use our coffee percolator. While we weren’t paying attention this designer would make sure that it would look embarrassingly out-of-date as soon as possible. This habit of designing for obsolescence has created a huge set of challenges. We could solve this problem by collectively renouncing all but the most basic of material comfort. Alternatively we could accept the status quo. But while one approach seems retrograde, doomed to failure, the other is simply unthinkable. Perhaps our ticket to a better, more sustainable future is to simply do what humans do best:

Design out way out again!
